ES Case manager and CRS came up with a letter to send to recipients taking their One Time Exemption. The letter can be sent out every three months. It reminds them of when the exemption period expires. The letter also reminds the recipient that TANF is a work program. The TANF check is compared to a 40-hour week minimum wage job. This is to encourage the recipient to go ahead and start finding employment rather than receiving TANF and working for less earnings.

Dear TANF Recipient:

You are taking your one time exemption, which allows you to be exempt from work requirements at this time. Coffee County DFCS Employment Services Unit is obligated to inform you of the TANF Work Program requirements. You need to make the most effective use of your time during this one time exemption period. Your one time exemption will end on __________________.

The TANF Work Now Program goal is for you to find employment. If you fail to find employment before your exemption ends you are then enrolled into the TANF Work Now Program. At this time you are required to participate in an activity consistent with a full-time job or 40 hours a week. This means you will be working for your TANF check which is $__________ a month. Your hourly rate will be $_____________ TANF check divided by (40 hours a week x 4 weeks) 160 hours = $_____________ an hour. A part time job at 40 hours a week minimum wage $5.15 an hour equals to $206 a week x 4 weeks = $824 month. Which check would you rather have?  Go to the Department of Labor and get their help. See what jobs are available. Get a job paying more than your TANF check now before you are enrolled in the TANF WORK NOW program for less earnings than a paying job. You have 10 days to notify your Employment Services Case manager of any change such as employment.
