Goals

Brooks County, along with a statewide network of communities, is committed to improving life for children and families. Special emphasis is placed on all school children succeeding at the appropriate skills level for their age and grade level and for adults to have their high school diploma or G.E.D.  Valdosta Technical College has a satellite site in Brooks County Middle School where Certificate/Diploma courses are offered.  The New TANF Work Now Model is providing resource information on local DOL career centers, job search techniques, access to computers to look for jobs / make applications on-line, and placement in work experience sites.  We have a Jobs Bulletin Board in the lobby of our DFCS office that is updated on a weekly basis and is available to anyone walking through our doors.

Little Bit About Brooks County

Brooks County was named in honor of Preston Smith Brooks (1819-1875) of South Carolina.  Brooks was a captain in the Mexican War and later became a United States congressman.

Brooks County came into being in 1858 from land that was originally part of Lowndes and Thomas Counties.  The original inhabitants of this area were the Apalachee Indians.  The first settlers to this regions, c. 1570, were Spanish missionaries from Florida who found the migratory Indians to be “naked and living under the most primitive of conditions.”  As time went on, the Apalachee country became a lively center with the Spaniards trading with the Indians for skins and wild game.

Brooks County became the main producer of food for the Confederacy during the War Between the States, and subsequently was known throughout the United States as the “Breadbasket of the South.”  Brooks County’s seat is Quitman – other communities throughout the county are Barney, Barwick, Dixie, Morven and Pavo.
